MODULE III

Introduction

Artificial intelligence is an essential element in the creation of educational content, but also in the creation of planning, opening the door to new ways in which teachers can use their time more intelligently, saving time without leaving aside the quality of their classes. Module III covered that aspect of planning that we as teachers give so much importance to since it is the structure for the course we design. This module covered planning with IA and incorporating the content learned to create new activities using IA. At first, my thoughts about this module were of curiosity as to how IA could not only develop specific content but also design an entire class or a class just through prompting. I knew that IA could create objectives and activities, but I was amazed at the idea of being able to generate a lesson plan for months and even generate content (topics) and activities while being segmented over time.

Development

In this module III, I learned many important concepts for my training as a teacher. I have learned that IA is a tool capable of creating lesson plans for weeks or less as long as we have a clear objective for what we want to use because if we do not have it when we do the prompting or command the result will be GIGO (garbage in garbage out) and as a teacher what we least want is that our planning does not apply to the context of our health of classes or is helping students improve or solve their learning needs. Also, I learned that we always have to double-check what the IA generates since it can always make mistakes in important aspects of the planning of our classes or activities, although it is not independent the help it gives us for lesson planning was incredible. Another important concept of this module was about the types of planning since I had only understood the traditional lessons, but through the activities of this module, I learned how complicated but important the planning stage is through the educational modules of the technical subjects. On the other hand, a key concept that I took away from this module is about prompting, because although being clear about what we want to generate is important, it is also important to use the right words, since the response that the artificial intelligence will give us will depend on that.

This module did change a lot of my understanding of how to teach English because when I was a practitioner I had to go through the planning of activities, content, and everything which took a lot of time and sometimes that can be very time-consuming. Now with AI, we teachers can be more productive and delegate functions to artificial intelligence for content planning, it's like having an assistant we can rely on. This has truly changed my way of teaching. Now I know that if I have to plan a class, I can delegate the planning function to ChatGPT, Copilot, or Claude and save time on a personal level by being smart. I can customize my classes the way I want; with a single command, I can completely change any planned activity and ask for unlimited ideas to improve the educational experience of my students and help them with their learning needs.

I will apply the concepts learned in this module to teach in the future. The way I'm going to do it is by programming class planning together with artificial intelligence, customizing my class according to the context of my class environment and my tool of teaching, and using the artificial intelligence learned and tested in this and past modules for content creation. Additionally, I will face the Module planation which is one of the big challenges I had on this module but using the AI I can now plan classes using the methodological plan and implement the activities as the way I want to. To sum up, I think my future classes will be enriched thanks to module III, because of the challenges and the way I learned how to use AI not only for the creation of activities but for implementing everything I have learned until this point of the specialization course to improve my lesson planning.

Conclusion and key learnings

What I've learned from this module III will be of great help for my teacher education. The knowledge acquired in this module has completely influenced my teaching methods, as now instead of starting from scratch in Word to create content, I can use ChatGPT or Claude to create a prompt and obtain the lesson plan I want. I can also give more commands to the AI to change activities or modify the lesson as I see fit and be more effective for my students. Moreover, this module has changed the way I implement AI, I used to search for content on the internet to fit an activity, but now with a command using Brisk or using the Magic School platform, I can generate content applied to the topic I'm teaching. Or implementing content such as audio with Suno AI. There are countless options, and this module has helped me understand how I can apply them to a lesson plan using AI.  Also, one of the important pieces of knowledge from this module is the new platforms I learned to use like LUMA AI, Educaid, and Magic School. And how these contents can be applied to the educational field. How it allows us to create objectives, activities, and lesson plans from scratch. As well as in the case of Magic School, creating spaces with specific tools for students to use and break out of the monotony of classes, bringing a new way of learning that will help students learn at their own pace.

Now, if I had to apply what I learned from this module to a specific lesson, it would be, for example, creating a 50-minute class lesson on the topic of possessive adjectives. What I would do is go to Claude and write a prompt specifying the subject, topic, minutes, and what I want to add. Warm-up, presentation, language notes, production, practice, assessment, wrap-up, homework assignment. The AI would generate the content and activities for me, and if I wanted to change one, I could do it just by writing it, which would make planning easier. I could ask for rubrics if we were doing a peer review or evaluating student production. Then I could use Gamma for presentation, Kahoot, Quizizz, and Nearpod for activities, and use ChatGPT or Claude itself for content. Use Brisk for a quiz based on a text or video and ask an AI for an appropriate homework assignment. In general, I would do it in 1 to 1.5 hours which used to take me 3 hours, reducing my work and effort while being productive without neglecting the quality of my classes.

Prompt of the lesson plan creation: Act like an ELT specialist and create a 50-minute lesson plan about the simple past tense. The lesson plan should have a warm-up, a presentation grammar notes, Semi-controlled practice, production activities (speaking and writing), assessment, wrap-up, and homework assignment. The lesson is for college students with basic English level (aged between 17-19). Provide a step-by-step guide for the teacher development of each activity of the lesson you create. add the material that will be used. Provide the objectives of the lesson also. Write the lesson plan in table format.

The reason why I chose these AI tools to present in this blog entry was because I consider them the most useful for creating academic content. They show the pace of development I have had during this module, and I consider them the most important to use to help our students in their learning process. Additionally, these tools demonstrate how AI can make lesson planning easier because through high-quality instructions we can get good results that help us facilitate one of the most tedious functions of being a teacher. They exemplify how AI can help us create amazing things with a simple command.

  2. Hello Wilson, I have read your blog and I really liked that part in which you say "This module did change a lot of my understanding of how to teach English because when I was a trainee I had to go through the planning of activities, content, and everything which took a lot of time and sometimes that can be very time-consuming" because I feel very related with that. Belive me that I know hoe time-consuming the process of looking for the material and the activities for a class, it can be. However, during module three, we have learned how to create useful material with the AI's help.
