MODULE I

Introduction


      The use of AI is part of our environment in this epoch in which the technology is evolving all the time and people is looking for new way to improve their productivity as much as possible. When I started the first module of the specialization course, I had some ideas about AI as how to use chat GPT to get answers or text production, use the bots of POE focus on different areas like teaching, sports, imagens, etc. I expected how to know better the tools apply to the ELT, new tools that can be implement in my teaching classes, learn about design thinking that was something I read in the syllabus, but I didn't have any idea what that was about, understand better the AI concepts. they were my expectation for the course. About my inicial thought of the module, it was like open the door to a new word because I didn't know how deep the word of the AI is, things like concepts of AI, that it can be found in GPS, bot of costume services, words predictor like in Gmail site, or using the keyboard of our cellphones are part of us and the AI is presented there. To learn how much we could create with AI such as prompting to obtain answers and imagens, lesson plans, presentations, codes. That was something that really make me to be really interested in the module one to open my mind out of the box and get new tools to use in my classes for being productive and dynamic with my students.



                            Development


       In this module, I learned many concepts that will help me grow up like a teacher. I learned how deep the AI (classification and subsets) is and how useful each of the subsets depending on what we need for example the large language models such as Gemini, Chat GPT, and Copilot are a subset of machine learning and can generate answer and text about we want to ask him in a natural and logical language thing like the resume of a topic, the planification of a lesson plan for a specific topic, classification of text ideas are possible using the AI. On the other hand, I learned about generative AI which was a new world of possibility for teaching because generative AI is the one that allows us to create new things as they could be the creation of images based on whatever we want to create or presentations from scratch in which we can use AIs like tome.app, decktopus, gamma.app that can provide the creation of presentation in a couple of minutes and reduce the time of working for this kind of activity that I teacher has to do. One of the main concepts that I learned through this module is prompting because if we don't prompt the information correctly the result might be bad. That's why I consider the learning of prompting one of the most important aspects of this model because I noted the difference when I used a large language model like chat GPT asking for resumen of grammatical content the result was not very organized, and some details had hallucinations, and the information seems to be taken out from a site that was not specialized in teaching English. However, I improved the manner of asking the AI through the specification of the context, the action of the AI as an expert, the audiences which this prompt will direct, the tone of the prompt, the length, and style of the form in which I want the product of the prompt and obtained better results getting information specialized on English. It is important to mention that prompting not only helps us in the creation of text but also in the creation of codes that can be used in apps like PowerPoint through the use of VBA codes to create presentations, or other apps that can make the day more productive. Additionally, I learned about design thinking which was a new topic for me, and in the end, I understand how important it is for problem-solving. Through the stages of emphasizing with the user, defining the problem, providing ideas to solve the problem, creating a prototype, and testing it. we were able to provide a solution to implement AI tools to a teaching problem. 

     I think that was a very important part of the module to know how we can provide real and practical solutions to English teaching problems through the use of AI. I think that this concept challenges my understanding of English teaching a lot because I didn't know how much information we could obtain through the use of AI. We can spend hours looking for information on the internet, books, etc but by using AI, can obtain the same level of information in a couple of minutes. Also, the reduction of time in the creation of activities, lesson plans, and presentations is amazing. When I was a practitioner, I spent many hours doing those things but with AI it can take less than one hour which makes that productive and effective. Besides, it changes the methodology at the teaching moment because the implementation of technology can close the technological gap like lack of computers, projectors, etc employing tools like Nearpod that can the traditional teaching more dynamic and adaptative to the classroom environment.  

     I consider these key concepts will help me a lot in my English teaching career because AI and technology in general are evolving all the time and things that 5 years ago, I believed were not possible now they are possible. In teaching is the same, I have to adapt my class materials and class creation to the new tools, or technology for promoting classes with a powerful impact on the students. Using tools for presentations, and codes, looking for information for classes, lesson plans, etc., and putting effort into checking their information, I can create great classes for my students. Additionally, I would say that one concept I learned from this module is something that I plan to implement in case it necessary is for design thinking. In case my students have a learning problem, I can apply design thinking to provide a solution to their needs as I learn in this module.



Conclusion and key learnings



     About the different concepts that I learned in this module, I can conclude that there are several applications that I can do in my classes. The knowledge I obtained from this module is valuable because now I understand how to interact correctly with AI. It is not just to ask it to create a thing, which would be basic prompting, but prompt engineering to ask the AI the way it can understand how I want the information, the format of the information, and the sources, or style of the information. This part of the module helped me to get an idea of how to ask the AI for the desired result. On the other hand, It can change how I plan my classes because I normally spend around two hours looking for information creating the slides, and looking for activities, but using Copilot this task can be reduced to some minutes for planning and other minutes to create presentation from scratch which means that I may have more time to dedicate to other aspects of my class. Besides, I changed how I create my lesson plan because, with large language models like copilot or chat GPT, I reduced the time in creating the lesson so that the app can provide me the time for each activity, the activity that I could develop in the lesson, the grammar notes, and examples about the lesson it creates. That is something amazing I think because this makes your classes practical even though I know that it's not perfect and I will check deeply the material I create, it helps to make the classes productive and dynamic because some activities and ways of planning can be different and effective than the one can plan. A knowledge that I learned from this module is the generation of content, creation of images, and only drawing or making a description of the object I want it is something that will help my English teaching career because I can generate personalized content for my students based on whatever I want to like the creating of pictures, drawings, portrait, poster with information of the topic we are study, etc. Also, the content of this module will change how I look for information because then I needed to look for information on many websites to read it and to split up which information would be good for students, understandable, etc, but now with the AI like a copilot, chat GPT, Gemini I can ask them information for one specific topic, and I will receive filtering information that I could apply for teaching in some minutes. I know this information needs to be checked but the saving of time and control of quality about the information the students receive would be excellent for their learning process. Something that influences my teaching method is design thinking because I know how my teaching method works but it can present sometimes problems to my students in case that happens, I currently know how to act and empathize with my students understand their needs and define and problem and provide a prototype like a solution of the problem what it can means a change or addition to my teaching method. That is something important because design thinking can help us to improve the methods, we use in teaching improving the weak areas our classes have and providing the student a good experience during the learning process.

     All that I have learned in this module, could be applied to the topic of the simple past tense. I would go to chat copilot to look for a lesson plan specifying the context of the class, the student or audience, the tone, the development of the class, the type of activities, the length of the lesson, and the style of the lesson. having the lesson, I can go to gamma. app for example and create from scratch a presentation based on the topic's past tense. I can ask him for activities in the presentation or use an app like Nearpod to create interactive games for students. I would double-check the information and look for errors and my class would be ready to be presented in less than two hours I would finish the lesson, the visuals, the activities, and the grammar. That's an example of how I would apply what I have learned in this module.

     I decided to include this content because it shows the process that I have been developing since the beginning of the module. First, the interaction with prompting that was new for me, and I learned how to improve that area to obtain a better result from the AI tool in this case Copilot. Also, I added the presentations that I created isolated and with the group to show how much we can do using AI for creating presentations from scratch only using a sentence or a prompt to generate a presentation that might need a lot of time in only a few minutes. Additionally, I include my first image created using the copilot function because I have never created an image using a prompt that I had designed so it was a very important thing that I learned from the module the image generation using AI. Finally, I decided to add lesson plans that I created with the Magicschool AI that I found useful and simple to use, there were many options but the first that I tried was the lesson plan which I considered as accurate. Also, I added a lesson plan that it as created with Copilot in which I programmed a prompt to generate a lesson plan based on the present perfect tense. In conclusion, I selected the material I consider that prove the evolution in the mastering of AI that I had during the first module and the ones which is probably that I started to use as a teacher to complement my class design.

As you mention, it is significant to take into account the different elements to create a good promt, such as, the role, context, tone/ style, the length, the audience, etc. in order to get a good product. I agree with you that knowing about AI is so valuable for us since we can implement it with our students, and if we teach them to use AI correctly; they can ask for a past topic and learn more.

As you wrote, creating material in less time is someting extraordinary since we as a teachers have a lot of things to do. Also, Having a variety of ideas to teach is fascinating because we as human beings sometime get stuck or we lack of ideas.
